Details

The main topic of discussion will be the Application of Data Science in the Actuarial Profession; in particular, General and Life Insurance. We will discuss how big data has impacted both reserving and pricing in these two areas.
We will also discuss how the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) intends to go about the Data Science programme that has already been rolled out to student members.

• Dimitrios Velmachos - Venture Capitalist and Financial Advisor in the Insurance and Financial Sector
• Michael Tripp – General Insurance Actuary, Partner at Mazars UK



The audience will comprise Masters students, final-year undergraduate students and alumni. The event will begin with an introduction of the speakers and each speaker will have time to present their work. A panel discussion will then follow and will be moderated by a faculty member from Cass. During the panel discussion, members of the audience will have a chance to participate by asking questions. We will have gifts for members who were active during this session.
The event will end at 8:30 p.m. to give room to a networking session with the speakers.

Jon Neale graduated from Cass in 2011 with an MSc in Financial Mathematics. He’s a qualified actuary with over 20 years of experience in financial reporting and ALM at several insurance companies and in consulting. This experience covers a broad spectrum of life insurance products, including annuities, with-profits and protection business.



He’s currently part of a team implementing “IFRS 17” at a leading insurer. This is a new international accounting standard for insurers and requires extensive changes to accounting and actuarial systems.”

Dimitrios Velmachos has extensive international experience in leadership roles in financial services and the (re)insurance industry, where he held the positions of Chief Actuary and General Manager for market-leading organisations. He has initiated strategic transformations, led diverse teams across the globe and established new ventures. Furthermore, he focuses on utilising advances in analytics, AI, and technology and has directed the proposition for organisations and consulting practices. He studied mathematics, is a qualified actuary and has also completed executive programmes at leading business schools in Europe and the USA.
